Cobra Lizard Floater

Six and a half inches of the real thing. Bass don't eat lizards because they're hungry — they eat them because a lizard on the bed means eggs are about to go missing. That's a reaction strike, and it's the meanest one in fishing.

The Cobra Lizard is built to trigger it. Broad body, four working legs, and a ribbon tail that stays alive on the slowest drag you can manage. Rig it on a light wire hook and it floats for a few seconds before easing down — long enough to hover right over a bed and make a fish lose its mind.

When to throw it

• Pre-spawn through spawn — the lizard's prime window. Drag it slow through bedding areas.
• Carolina rig — the classic. The float lifts the legs and tail up off bottom behind the weight.
• Texas rig — punch it into grass and heavy cover, then let it settle.
• Weightless over grass — swim it across the tops of hydrilla and hold on.
